Health of Chile Quake Victims
Worrying
SANTIAGO de CHILE - Chilean health
authorities in the southern region of Maule
have expressed concern over the health
situation of about 5,000 Chileans sheltered
in tents since the February 27 quake.
Between 4,000 and 5,000 people in that
region are living in tents, and 480 others
in shelters, affirmed Alex Silva,
epidemiologists of the local Public Health
department.
The most complex situation could be for
those living in tents, and though no serious
diseases have appeared, the weather
situation must be taken into consideration,
when the rainy season begins, he indicated.
Silva told Radio Cooperativa that the
current situation in general is controlled,
as no big outbreaks have emerged.
Some cases of gastroenteritis disorders,
diarrhea, and flu have been reported, but no
significant outbreaks have been so far
detected, he stressed.
Silva recommended wrapping up warm,
ventilating places, and keeping away from
crowded sites to avoid respiratory problems.
