Panama SUNTRACS Demands Liberation of Workers

PANAMA - The Construction Workers Trade Union (SUNTRACS) is demanding on Friday the liberation of the workers that were arrested on Tuesday due to the confrontation with the police during a protest.

Legal representatives of the union said on Friday that nearly 200 members of that organization are under arrest at La Joyita penitentiary.

The workers lack of the defense right and have been in an irregular and arbitrary judicial situation for more than 48 hours, according to the representatives.

SUNTRACS members pointed that if the current situation remains, there is a possibility of calling a warning strike for 24 hours.

The National Front for the Defense of Economic and Social Rights (FRENADESCO) denounced that the workers are under inadequate conditions and charges have not been pressed against them.

Vice Minister of Commerce Ricardo Quijano affirmed that the government will intercede to prevent protests that affect other people with the blocking of circulation routes.
