Workers Released After Jailed
For Protests
A total of 224 workers were arrested in
Panama during this week's protests against
the government's economic policy.
All the workers were released after being
fined us$15 each, said the secretary-general
of the Suntracs construction workers’ union,
Genaro Lopez.
Lopez added that Monday's protests have also
been suspended to avoid another clash with
police. The union leader confirmed that all
the workers were released by 5am from the La
Joyita prison that is located outside the
capital.
Panama's Ombudsman, Ricardo Vargas,
protested the jailing of the workers, who
were held in a shed at jail and crowded
together.
Panama's Interior Minister, José Raúl
Molino, warned that street protests that
disrupt the free movement of traffic will
not be tolerated. |
