Unsolved Conflict at Honduras
University
TEGUCIGALPA - The strike at Honduras'
National Autonomous University (UNAH) will
mark tomorrow its first month, without a
solution in sight to the problem due to the
refusal of authorities to consider the
demands of teachers and students.
The conflict began on February 23th, when
the workers' union of the house of higher
education declared a gradually work stoppage
to demand the approval of a new collective
work contract that includes wage increases.
The Association of Teachers and students
opposed to the claims of the authorities to
reform the plan to increase the payment for
registration and graduation expenses joined
the protest movement.
As the Rector of the UNAH, Julieta
Castellanos, cites lack of funds to pay wage
increases, teachers say that in recent
months were irregularly employed people with
very high salaries.
Castellanos said she will not negotiate as
long as the strike continues, and threatened
to deduct the salary to those involved in
the protest.
"They went on strike illegally, but the
forms will reflect the payment, according to
the working hours", warned the rector.
The authorities also threatened to issue
arrest warrants against strikers and bring
them to justice, which could aggravate the
conflict.
The protest movement began at the UNAH
headquarters in this capital, and spread to
the Regional University Center of the
Atlantic Coast and Valle de Sula's National
University.
