Banks Will Stop Accepting "Plateadas"
Beginning April
If you still have saved up ˘5, ˘10 and ˘10 "plateadas"
or silver plated coins, banks will stop
accepting them on April 1, 2010, after which
the Banco Central de Costa Rica (BCCR)
offices in downtown San José will be the
only place to exchange them.
The withdrawl of the coins from the market
began on December 31, 2009.

The reason for the withdrawl is that the
plateadas do not include brail to allow the
blind to distinguish between the coins.
The Central Bank expects to sell the metal
coins as scrap metal. |
