Brazil can Help Peace in
Middle East
BRASILIA - President Luiz Inacio Lula da
Silva asserted on Monday that Brazil has to
hold talks and try to find a solution for
the people in the Middle East to live
definitively in peace.
Brazil is interested in peace in that
region, in first place because we have a
history as peaceful country and because we
understand that the end of the conflict is
in the interest of Israel, Palestine,
Jordan, the United States, Iran, Syria and
the whole world, said the president when
commenting on his recent tour of several
Middle East countries.
In his habitual Coffee with the President
radio show on Mondays, Lula asserted that
only peace gives way to economic
development, rent distribution, and social
justice, and we discussed that when we
visited Israel, Palestine and Jordan last
week.
It is not that Brazil wants to interfere in
that conflict. It is just that we understand
that people and nations involved in the
Middle East issue understand that Brazil can
help, due to its good relations with all
those countries and all the political
factions in that region, he said.
Although he stated that it was difficult
being able to define what Brazil's role
would be in those peace negotiations, Lula
said the subject is complicated and that he
championed the thesis that the United
Nations Organization (UN) is the authority
that could establish the process to ease the
tensions I the Middle East.
As the UN does not play that role, there is
a gap. I mean, everybody is talking about
the crisis in that region, but nobody solves
it, Lula said.
Thus, Brazil is trying to contribute,
starting from the fact that people trust our
nation, he held.
"We have a problem that is even a fit of
passion sometimes, between Israelis and
Palestinians, with their political
formation, their history and the experience
of peace. We can make a huge contribution to
peace in the Middle East," he said.
