No Tortugiusmo By Porteadores Today, Maybe Tomorrow or Friday

The expected "tortuguismo" or slowdown by the porteadores for today was called off at the last minute following a day long at Casa Presidencial on Tuesday.

However, the protest action may happen tomorrow (Thursday) or Friday since the table discussions didn't get anywhere, notwithstanding a last minute proposal tables by the viceministreo de la Presidencia, Roberto Thompson and the new ministro de Obras Públicas y Transportes, Francisco Jiménez.

The leaders representing the porteadores flatly rejected the proposal, saying there is no guarantee in it that they can keep operating without reprisals of the law.

"The are offering us an illegal concession, the impossible as they cannot guarantee one plate, let alone 11.000. They want us to accept their word", said Germán Lobo, director of the la Cámara Costarricense de Porteadores.

Lobo added that the only option left for them is to protest of whatever, and as such called off the protests planned for today to map out a new strategy to pressure the government and the legislative assembly into action.

The government's proposal would includes the issuing of a regulation by the ministerio de Obras Públicas y Transportes (MOPT) for up to 18 months that would allow the porteadores to continue working under the regulation if the legislation is not amended.

For now the dialogue is broken, even though vice-ministro Thompson insists that the channels of communications will be kept open.
