Earthquake in Guatemala Causes Panic

GUATEMALA - A 4.7-degree earthquake in the Richter scale caused alarm on Wednesday among the Guatemalan population, although there were no victims or material damage reported, official sources said.

Faced wit the earth tremor and panic among the population, which was sensitive due to the recent earthquakes in Haiti and Chile, Civil Protection authorities called the people to keep calm.

The National Seismology Institute said the tremor was registered at 11:08 hours, local time, and its epicenter was located 83 miles from the Guatemalan capital, off the country's Pacific coasts.

That institute said that the earthquake was located 12 miles deep in the Pacific and was felt all along the Guatemalan southern coast, the central plateau, which includes the country's capital, and several eastern departments.
