Former Conjoined Twins In
Custody Of Costa Rica's Child Services
Former conjoined twins, Yurelia and Fiorlla,
are today in the hands of the Patronato
Nacional de la infancia (PANI) - Child
Welfare Agency - following reports of
unhealthy living conditions in the family
home.
The PANI has also filed a criminal complaint
of disobedience against the parents of the
two little girls with the Organismo de
Investigación Judicial (OIJ) when the two
girls and the parents disappeared from the
family home, leaving police empty handed
during a raid.
Yurelia and Fiorella's parents had been
given notice of the living conditions the
girls were subjected to, pets and family
members smoking, which was unhealthy for the
girls who suffer from respiratory problems.
María Elizabeth Arias and José Luis Rocha
finally gave in to police request to hand
over the girls following reports that they
parents had hidden the girls and maybe even
having taken them out of the country.
The police action was coordinated with the
Hospital Nacional de Niños (Children's
Hospital) who has reported the twins
visiting the hospital on numerous occasions
and the parents not following medical
recommendations.
The conjoined twins were born in 2005 and
underwent separation surgery at Lucile
Packard Children's Hospital in Palo Alto,
California in November 2007.
