Porteadores To Resume Protests After Semana Santa

The porteadores decided last night to suspend the protect action announced for today (Thursday). In fact, they will no take to the streets until after Semana Santa.

The decision came following six hours of meetings on Wednesday to plan out a strategy to pressure the government into allowing them to work without reprisals from the law and for legislators to not eliminate the word "person" from legislation before the assembly that would in effect make the "porteo" illegal.

The leaders of the porteadores said that the protests will be back after Semana Santa and with the support of other groups.

The informal taxi operators rejected a proposal by the government made on Tuesday that would allow them to operate under "regulation" for the next 18 months after which they would be allowed to bid for taxi plates.

The protests after the Holy Week holiday are expected to include other groups upset with the current government and although the leaders are calling for peaceful protests, the last time the porteadores took to the streets two weeks ago, violence erupted and police had to use force and tear gas to regain control.
