1.275 Kg Of Cocaine Seized In Quepos

With the help of the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), Costa Rican police have seized more 1.275 kilograms (more than a tonne) of cocaine from a drug trafficking ring in Quepos.

The gang used the Narangjo and Savegre rivers in Quepos to move the drugs that was transported from Colombia, say police.

Arrested were four Colombians, a Nicaraguan and two Costa Ricans.

The police operation was under the control of the Policía de Control de Drogas (PCD) - Costa Rican drug enforcement police - the Servicio Nacional de Guardacostas (Costa Rican Coast Guard) and the Fuerza Pública.

Authorities raided early morning Thursday areas in Playa Linda de Matapalo.

Two boats laden with 525 kg of cocaine and two vehicles loaded with another 750 kg were seized along with GPS trackers and an AK-47 assault rifle from the men, Security Minister Janina Del Vecchio said Thursday.

Police said the drugs were to be shipped to North America or Europe.

According to official figures, close to eight tonnes of cocaine have been seized in Costa Rica in 2010. Almost 100 tonnes of cocaine and us$17.5 million in cash have been confiscated since May 2006.
