Chile Enacts Law For Bonuses To Poor Families

SANTIAGO - Chilean President Sebastian Piñera on Thursday signed into law a bill that distributes bonuses to poor families in the country.

The measure, which is the first law issued under Piñera's administration, will benefit more than 2 million low-income families and will cost some 320 million U.S. dollars.

Piñera said the bonus is a "fair, necessary and effective" benefit, because many families were affected by the earthquake on Feb. 27.

The bonus will be distributed by the BancoEstado Bank to those with an account in it, while those who do not have an account will have to submit their ID to bank branches on the day they receive their bonuses.

The bonus is one of the electoral campaign promises of Piñera.
