Bus Operators Cannot Jack Fares For Semana Santa

Although Semana Santa is a "peak demand" period for buses as vacationers head out to the beaches and resort, some bus operators take opportunity to jack their prices. But, that is a no, no.

The Consejo de Transporte Público (CTP) reminds the public that bus operators cannot increase fares for Semana Santa, on any routes, without authorization.

Bus fares in Costa Rica are established only by the Autoridad Reguladora de los Servicios Públicos (Aresep) and although bus operators can increase the number of units on a particular route or routes, it cannot vary the route nor the fare.

This applies also to seniors who can travel at a discounted fare or for free and children under the age of 3 that travel for free on any bus route.

The CTP and the Aresep are urging the public to report any bus operator who has increased rates or not complying with the seniors and children free fare, charging or bumping them from a ride.

The number to call is: 8000 ARESEP (8000 273737) or fax: 2290 2010.
