This Week There Are Two Legal Holiday Days, Thursday and Friday

According to Costa Rica's Código de Trabajo (Labour Code) Good Thursday (April 1) and Good Friday (April 2) are legal holidays and workers who are required to work on those days are to be paid double their normal salary.

The Código also stipulates that for those workers who take the entire Semana Santa (Holy Week) off, employers have the right to reduce their vacation period by three days (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday).

The normal practice for the central government and many public institutions is to close the entire week and in agreement with the workers and unions, the first three days of the week are vacation days. Some 300.000 public sector employees will be enjou=ying the entire week, and if you include the weekends, the total time off comes to 9 days.

The private sector may treat the week closing different, giving employees the entire week off and without a reduction in salary for the three days or using vacation days.
