Porteadores To Visit La Negrita To Ask For Guidance

The porteadores - informal or gypsy cabs - are putting their faith in La Negrita to guide them to a solution to their standoff with the government.

Germán Lobo, director of the Cámara Costarricense de Porteadores, explained that a group of porteadores will head out to Cartago this week, not in a protest action or block traffic, but rather to visit the Virgen de Los Angeles to ask for guidance in what to do next in their fight to pressure the government into an agreement.

The porteadores want to be able to work without reprisalso of the law if the legislative assembly approves the changes to the Código Commercial (Commercial Code) that pretends to eliminate the word "persons" from the law that pertains to the porteo or the door-to-door taxi services.

The group has been at loggerheads with the Arias administration.

Last week a meeting to resolve the problem did not result in any agreement and the poreteadores have vowed to take their action to the streets. Again.

This week, the caravan of porteadores is expected to be between 400 and 500 vehicles.

Lobo was clear that this is a not a protest action, there are no blockades or traffic slowdowns planned, just a demonstration of their faith and solidarity.

However, next week it all could be a different matter as the porteadores rush against the clock to get an agreement before the current administration gives way to the next on May 8.
