Declaration in Defense of Cuba
BUENOS AIRES - The Solidarity with Cuba
Chapter of Santa Fe, Argentina, issued a
statement in defense of Cuba to repudiate
the media campaign mounted against the
people and government of this Caribbean
nation.
The document, to which Prensa Latina had
access, denounces "the operation of
information deceit aimed to transform into a
martyr a common criminal" convicted more
than 15 years ago, says refering to the case
of Orlando Zapata Tamayo.
Like the European parliament, stressed, we
moan the death of a human being, however, we
do not share the status of "political
prisoner" for a man convicted of common
crimes to justice.
The resolution considers offensive
encouraging the death of a man with the
intention that the Cuban counterrevolution
has a champion.
It urges member of parliament from the old
continent and the major news networks to end
with their double standards when addressing
issues relating to Cuba.
In this sense, it critizices the fact that
they do not express their opposition against
the U.S. and European participation in
Afghanistan and Iraq wars, the double
occupation of Haiti, or tolerance before the
coup in Honduras.
It also states that neither the media
corporation, or European Parliament were
able to deny the proper medical assistance
given to Zapata Tamayo, a fact acknowledged
by his own mother, or the permanent contact
with his family.
"On the other hand, they say nothing about
the systematically denied rights to the five
Cubans imprisoned in the U.S.,
internationally recognized as political
prisoners and anti-terrorist" it notes.
Finally, it calls social activists,
politicians, unions, artists and
intellectuals and the community in general,
to support the right of self determination
of the Cuban people and the principle of
noninterference in its internal affairs. |
