Indigenous Forum in Costa
Rica on Climate Change
Participants in the Latin American
Indigenous Forum on Climate Change, with
venue in Costa Rica, blamed the dominant
economic model for environmental
degradation.
"All having to do with climate change is
related to the economic model that prevails
in the world, which is causing environmental
impacts and imbalances," said the chairman
of the Central American Indigenous Commettee,
Donald Rojas.
The activist said the meeting will discuss
the possibility of adaptation and mitigation
of environmental degradation of indigenous
peoples and the promotion of an economic
model more equitable with nature and human
rights based on traditional knowledge.
The organizations also seek to define a
common agenda on the topic towards the
Global People's Conference on Climate Change
and the Rights of Mother Earth, to be held
in the Bolivian city of Cochabamba from 19
to 22 April next, he said.
According to Rojas, the participating groups
also seek to develop a joint statement aimed
at the United Nations Conference on Climate
Change (COP-16), slated to December in
Cancun, Mexico.
The forum began yesterday in the Costa Rican
capital and will last until Wednesday.
Among the 10 organizations participating in
the event are the Andean Coordinator of
Indigenous Organizations, the Coordinator of
Indigenous Organizations of the Amazon
Basin, the Indigenous Council of Mesoamerica
and the International Alliance of Indigenous
and Tribal Peoples of the Tropical Forests.
