Celebrates Return Of Long-Time FARC Abductee
BOGOTA - Colombian President Alvaro Uribe
Tuesday celebrated the return of a long-time
abductee held by the Revolutionary Armed
Forces of Colombia (FARC) and vowed to keep
up the fight against the leftist rebel
group.
Sergeant Pablo Emilio Moncayo, who had been
held by FARC for 12 years, was released
Tuesday during an international operation
involving Colombia, Brazil and the
International Red Cross.
"We welcome Sergeant Moncayo...Colombia
receives, with open arms, all those who come
back from captivity and rejects kidnappers,"
Uribe said in the city of Cucuta in
northeast Colombia.
"Every year we have persisted. We cannot
deny the relation between our persistency
and the defeat of the kidnappers in our
country," he said, urging all Colombians to
keep up their fight.
Meanwhile, FARC, the largest guerrilla group
in Colombia, said Tuesday it will not
release any more hostages unless they are
exchanged for its members in government
custody.
The group has released six hostages since
last year and is still keeping hundreds of
hostages. |
