Bus and Tanker
Collision Leaves
1 Dead, 60
Injured In
Guanacaste
It was shortly
after 10am
Saturday morning
when the peace
and tranquility
of Sonzapote, in
San Dimas de La
Cruz,
Guanacaste, was
broken when a
tanker truck and
bus collided,
leaving one dead
and 60 injured.
The Policía del
Tránsito report
indicated that
the accident
occurred at
10:10am on a
section of the
highway from
Liberia to Peñas
Blancas, when
the driver of
the tanker truck
says he lost
control of his
rig, jackknifing
on the slippery
road surface,
the tanker
slamming head on
in the oncoming
bus full of
passengers.
The driver of
the bus was
killed, while
the some 60
passengers were
injured, some
seriously, many
others with cuts
and bruises.
The report
indicates that
the driver of
the tanker truck
was trapped
inside his
vehicle for some
time and it
wasn't until
4:45pm when the
truck could be
removed from the
road and work
crews were able
to clean the
debrís and open
passage of
traffic that had
lined up for
kilometres at
each side of the
accident.
The impact sent
the bus off the
road and into a
gulley. The
report says that
the bus hit the
tanker almost
head on.
Residents say
that vehicles
pass along that
section of the
highway at
excessive
speeds.
Some 20
ambulances were
on the scene, as
well as
firefighters and
other emergency
response units.
Miracolously the
fatalities was
one.
The traffic
police say that
they are looking
into the
possibility that
the tanker truck
driver was
speeding, losing
control on a
curve. The
driver was taken
into police
custody, charged
with wrongful
death and injury
and Judicial
Agents began
their
investigation
with interviews
of the
passengers of
the bus and
other witnesses
to the accident. |
