The Braulio
Carrillo Will
Not Open Today
As Had Been
Announced
Contrary to the
statement by the
Policía de
Tránsito on
Saturday that
the Braulio
Carrillo (San
José - Guapiles)
highway would be
re-opened Monday
morning, the
road will
continue closed
at least until
Thursday.
Work crews of
the Ministerio
de Obras
Públicas y
Transportes (MOPT)
have been busy
since last
Tuesday removing
debris from the
landslides east
of the Zurquí
tunnel.
MOPT engineers
had hoped to use
a series of
controlled
dynamite
explosions of
two slopes
considered high
rish areas for
the large number
of landslides
they generate.
However, bad
weather has
delayed plans.
The MOPT says it
hopes to
dynamite the
slopes today and
then use the
coming days to
remove the
debris. Work
crews were
already on the
scene this
morning to take
advantage of the
clear morning
skies, as well
as
agents of the Dirección de
Inteligencia y
Seguridad (DIS)
- Costa Rica's
intelligence
security police,
who control the
movement of
dynamite in the
country.
Geological
studies
confirm the
instability of
the soil and
this has MOPT
authorities
worried of
further
mudslides and
risk to human
life.
Some 6.000
vehicles daily
use Ruta 32 in
the area where
it is closed,
causing a
nightmare for
people on both
sides of the
