Bolivian Government Announces Salary Rise Amid Protests

LA PAZ - The Bolivian government on Sunday announced a salary increase of 5 percent for both public and private sectors, but the insufficient rise was widely rejected and could spur more protests.

The salary rise is 5 percent for state and private company workers and 3 percent for policemen and militaries, Bolivian Presidency Minister Oscar Coca announced at a press conference.

Coca said teachers of public schools and health sector workers would also have an increase of 5 percent.

This increase will also be applied to the national minimum salary, which will increase from 647 bolivianos (91 U.S. dollars) to 679.5 bolivianos (96 dollars).

Coca said this increase would not produce inflation. "It is an increase with support. This increase is based on the sustainability."
