Honduras Establishes Truth
Commission On Coup
TEGUCIGALPA - The Honduran government
Tuesday established a Truth and
Reconciliation Commission to present a
report in eight months about the coup on
June 28, 2009, which was carried out against
former President Manuel Zelaya.
The ceremony to establish the Commission was
presided over by Honduran President Porfirio
Lobo Sosa and Secretary-General of the
Organization of American States (OAS) Jose
Miguel Insulza.
The decree to establish the Commission was
signed by a coordinator, Guatemala's former
Vice-President Eduardo Stein.
Apart from Stein, the Commission also has
two international experts,Peruvian lawyer
Maria Amadilia Zavala Valladares and
Canadian diplomat Michael Kergin. Moreover,
there are two domestic experts, the dean of
the National Autonomous University of
Honduras (UNAH) Julieta Castellanos and
former UNAH dean Jorge Omar Casco.
The Commission will interview the coup's
participants, visit scenes and get access to
classified information.
The creation of this Commission is part of
the Tegucigalpa-San Jose Agreement signed on
Oct. 30, 2009, which aims to find a solution
to the political crisis after the coup. |
