Laura
Chinchilla, An
Extension Of
Oscar Arias?

Laura Chinchilla
Miranda is only
a few days away
from become
Costa Rica's
first female
president and
replacing the
current Nobel
prize winning
president, Dr.
Oscar Arias
Sanchez. It has
been said that
Chinchilla is
nothing but an
extension of the
Arias regime
however this may
not be entirely
accurate.
Laura Chinchilla
is part of the
Partido
Liberación
Naciona (PLN)
political party
here in Costa
Rica. Clearly
the fact that
Arias and
Chinchilla are
both members of
the same
political party
will influence
their vision on
how Costa Rica
should be
governed moving
forward. However
Chinchilla has
her own agendas
and visions for
the future of
Costa Rica and
in many ways,
they are
uniquely hers.
Having spent
over a decade
working as a
consultant in
Latin America
and Africa for
various
international
agencies in the
area of
institutional
reform, with
special emphasis
on judicial
reform and
public security
reform,
Chinchilla had
far more
experience over
her running
mates in this
important area
of government.
First on the
agenda of Laura
Chinchilla is
improving the
judicial system
and improving
the overall
safety of this
great nation. On
any given day,
reading the news
on the front
page of
InsideCostaRica
will show you
this is an area
where Costa Rica
could definitely
use improvement.
As before with
Arias, there is
special
attention being
given to the
preservation of
parks,
rainforests and
oceans within
this country.
Costa Rica
currently
dedicates 24-26%
of it's land
mass to
protected parks
and reserves,
making Costa
Rica number one
in the world for
protection of
land mass.
Chinchilla has
plans on
retaining this
record and
possibly even
improving it.
Also high on the
agenda for
Chinchilla is
improving the
education and
welfare of the
country's
children by
reforming child
protection laws
along with
providing more
assistance to
the elderly.
One of
Chinchilla's
campaign
promises was to
improve trade
ties with China.
Something Arias
was very
passionate
about.
In the past,
each new
president elect
has vowed to
fight poverty.
Problem is that
whenever a new
president comes
to power, the
previous
president's
efforts are
scrapped in
order to pave
the way for
THEIR vision for
fighting poverty
and essentially
tossing aside
the previous 4
years. Laura
Chinchilla
however is
taking a
different
approach
(possible reason
for the 'Arias
puppet'
comments) and
rather than
tossing away all
Arias's efforts
for her own, she
will expand on
them and simply
try and advance
the work
previously
accomplished by
her counterpart,
Oscar Arias.
When the
elections of
2010 took place,
the world
watched in
anticipation for
the results to
see if Costa
Rica, notorious
for being a
'macho' country,
would elect
their first
female president
since their
independence
from Spain in
1821 and their
first elected
president Juan
Mora Fernandez
in 1825. Now the
world waits to
see if Laura
Chinchilla
Miranda, can
live up to her
campaign
promises before
being elected.
