Riot In Venezuelan Prison Kills 8

CARACAS - A riot among prisoners in a prison center near the capital Caracas killed eight people and injured three others on Tuesday.

Consuelo Cerrada, national director of the Prisons Services of the Interior and Justice Ministry, said the riot took place in the Santa Ana Prison Center in Tachira state, 850 kilometers southwest of Caracas. The situation is now under control.

He said the riot was due to a dispute among the inmates for the spaces in the prison.

The Venezuelan Observatory of Prisons (OVP) said in its report that the Venezuelan prisons are overcrowded. The prisons have a total capacity of 12,000 prisoners, but the number has been surpassed by 275 percent.

According the OVP, a total of 366 prisoners died in Venezuelan prisons in 2009, while 635 were injured. In 2008 the number was 422 and 854, respectively.
