Guatemalans Protest Electricity Rate Hike

GUATEMALA - People's organizations in Guatemala began blockades and sit-ins throughout the country in protest for the the decision of the government to raise the electricity rate, which increases the burden of most Guatemalans.

Social Leaders and activists announced such actions will take place until May 10 and will lodge an legal suit the next day.

The actions are in protest of the new prices set for the quarterly that began on May 1 by the National Electric Energy Commission (CNEE).

A huge march is being prepared in this capital for next May 14 demanding derogation of that measure that will considerably increase the cost of living, denounced the protesters.

The CNEE has been increasing the electricity rate since last year with the argument of little hydro electrical generation because of shortage of rain and high cost of oil and its derivatives.

So far from February to April 2010 a large sector of Guatemalans faced a rise of 20.9 percent but the customers' patience reached the top when they were aware that from May to July the hike is between 25 to 30 percent.
