The Braulio Carrillo (Zurquí) Continues Closed

Weather conditions in the area known as the Zurquí have hampered efforts to re-open the Braulio Carrillo or Ruta 32 (San José - Limón) which has been closed since Tuesday last week.

Authorities has hoped to re-open the road over the weekend, then on Monday, then on Thursday and well right now it is not known when.

Using dynamite to blast the slopes at kilometre 22 of the highway has been unsuccessful as the weather conditions could not allow the crews to safely enter the blast site.

The idea of the blasting is to bring down tons of dirt and mud that will eventually come down on its own, causing more problems on an already plagued highway and becoming a high risk for the 12.000 or so vehicles that transit the section of the road daily.

Work crews were able to blast one area on Tuesday, but more blasting and cleaning up is necessary to make the area safe.

The section of the highway closed is east of the Zurquí tunnel, which effectively closes all traffic from San José to Guapiles and to Limòn.

The only alternate route is by way of Cartago and Turrialba, through a winding and narrow road with steep climbs and drops, making it virtually impossible for heavy truck traffic.

The ministerio de Obras Públicas y Transportes (MOPT) is hoping to re-open the road, at least partially, Saturday or Sunday. But.
