Government Reach
An Agreement
That Eliminates
Road Blocks
The road blogs
and tortuguismo
may be over with
the agreement
reached between
the porteadores
(the informal
taxis) and the
government on
Thursday.
In the
agreement, the
porteadores have
agreed not to
take to the
streets during
the negotiations
process that
will be
continued by the
Chinchilla
administration.
On the
government side,
there is a
commitment of
continuance of
the talks and to
sit down with
the porteadores
before the end
of the month, to
establish a
timetable and
review the
various
proposals.
The porteadores
have used
roadblocks to
pressure the
government to
remove the word
"persons" from
the proposed
legislation that
would, in
effect, end the
porteo or
carrying of
passengers by
the informal or
gypsy cabs.
The Arias
administration
has tried to
bring a solution
to a problem
that has been
dangling for
