Italy and less
like the United
States", were
the words spoken
by outgoing
Costa Rican
president, Oscar
Arias. At least
that is the
conclusions of
the prez, who
ends his term at
noon tomorrow.
Speaking to
Alvaro Murillo
of the Spanish
daily, La Nación,
Arias said that
politicians in
Costa Rica are
now using more
"foul language",
the all accuse
each other of
corruption and
drape themselves
in six, seven or
eight flags,
seemingly more
like the
European nation
and less like
the North
American
neighbour.
"The quality of
political class
has
deteriorated",
said Arias, who
added that
politics in
Costa Rica is
becoming less
cultured, less
respectful and
the language has
become more
belligerent and
coarser.
The president
also complained
about the
dispersal of
political power
and the increase
in the number of
parties, which
means the end of
bipartisanship.
Arias added an
additional
hurdle: the
effect of
ideologies and
the consequent
lack of
pragmatism.
Arias warned
that Costa Rica
is not the only
country in the
region with such
political
problems and is
more in line
with countries
like Venezuela
or Argentina. |
