Peru Snub to US Anti-Immigration Law Grows

LIMA - The rejection to the anti-immigration law in the US Arizona state increased in Peru on Thursday after the Peruvian Congress condemned it unanimously.

The condemnation to the Arizona anti-immigration law is also seen at the local media and in all sectors, since it is considered racist and discriminatory, as well as a potential danger for about 10,000 Peruvian living in Arizona, 40 percent of whom are undocumented.

The Peruvian Congress statement calls the Organization of American States, which will hold a foreign minister meeting in this capital in June, to adopt effective measures to protect the rights of the immigrants settled in Arizona.

The Arizona anti-immigration law includes detention of those who have foreign features and are suspected of being illegal immigrants.

The president of the Catholic Episcopal Conference, Monsignor Miguel Cabrejos, had previously said that the law is an affront to dignity, and he called Peruvians to join up against that legislation.
