Argentina to Prevent Oil Mining in Falklands

BUENOS AIRES - Argentina warned British authorities that it would take necessary steps, in line with international law, to prevent oil extraction in the Falkland Islands.

In a note released in Buenos Aires on Thursday, the Argentinian Foreign Ministry strongly rejected the attempt to illegally seize non-renewable resources that belong to the Argentinian people.

The Argentinian authorities protest came in the wake of reports that the British firm Rockhopper Exploration might have found oil in northern Falkland Islands, the sovereignty of which is claimed by Argentina.

The official text makes clear to British authorities authorizing the prospecting, and to the firm involved in these illegal activities, that the Argentinian government will continue denouncing this action in all international forums and recalls that Argentina is acting with great determination in the control of maritime traffic between the continent and the islands.
