Panama Canal Can Confront Accidents

PANAMA - The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has the necessary capacity to confront different kinds of accidents similar to the fuel leak that took place this week at one of the locks, executives of the entity reported.

ACP Administrator Alberto Aleman recalled that about 12 accidents are reported avery year, which is a low rate compared to over 14,000 ships that goe through the canal.

According to Aleman, the Union of Control and Response to Pollution was able to recover the fuel in a short time. Durng 2009, leak drillss were carried out in order to assess how quickly the canal can confront them, keeping its operational capacity.

Aleman also said the relevant investigation would be carried out to determine the causes of the acccident and assess if the actions by the specialized teams were according to the strategy planned for those cases.
