SAN SALVADOR - President of El Salvador
Mauricio Funes and Japanese Deputy Foreign
Minister Koichi Takemasa signed in San
Salvador a cooperation agreement worth $17
million to give a boost to works for natural
disaster prevention and mitigation.
A communique issued by the presidency
explained that the signing of the agreement
occurred during a visit by the Japanese
official to El Salvador to strengthen
bilateral relations in the fields of
collaboration, trade and investments.
During their meeting, the parties also
discussed the issue of La Union port,
expected to start operating in few weeks, as
well as the eventual Japanese support to the
project, said the document.
Funes invited the Japanese visitor to
promote investment in El Salvador among
Japanese businesspeople and expressed his
government's commitment to guarantee legal
security to them.
The Salvadorian president also committed to
promoting dialogue between the Central
American Integration System (SICA) and
Japan.
Salvadorian Foreign Minister Hugo Martinez
and Japanese Ambassador to El Salvador
Shisei Kaku were present in the meeting.
Takemasa arrived on Wednesday night to San
Salvador as part of a Latin American tour
that also included Venezuela, Saint Lucia,
Jamaica and Panama.
