President Chinchilla Pledges Cooperation With All Parties

President Laura Chinchilla, sworn in as Costa Rica's first female president on Saturday, pledged cooperation with all parties and citizens during her inauguration speech. "Leadership consists in crafting agreements," she said in her speech.

"Costa Rica is our shared home, and no one should seek a monopoly on the truth."

Shortly before noon on Saturday, outgoing president, Oscar Arias, handed the presidential sash to Chinchilla, who put it on and kissed it, to start her four year term. Her two vice presidents were sworn in minutes before.

Chinchilla is expected to continue the economic policies of Arias, that includes closer ties with the United States and slashing trade barriers.

The ceremony went off without a hitch. The group of protestors who are not in agreement with the Arias policies and wanted the new president to know, were kept at bay on Paseo Colón by policy, across to the other end from the expansive La Sabana park.
