La Sabana All Dressed Up For The Transfer of Powers

After weeks of preparation it took only two hours to complete the inauguration ceremony of the new president, witnessed by school children from all seven provinces, hundreds of invited guests, heads of state and representatives of 56 nations and thousands of citizens, in the open-air of the La Sabana park.

Under the sun of the hot Saturday morning that slowly turned to threats of a downpour (the weather did hold out and the thousands of umbrellas on hand were used by many to hold off the rays of the hot sun) the ceremony went off without a hitch.

Just before noon, Laura Chinchilla Miranda took her rigthful place as Costa Rica's new and first woman president, swearing to govern with humility, honesty and firmness.

Once the official ceremony was over, Chinchilla retired to the special room set up behind the stage, to swear in her cabinet and sign her first presidential decree, as promised, stopping open-pit mining in Costa Rica.
