Chinchilla Chose
To Sleep In On
Her Big Day
President Laura
Chinchilla
admitted to
reporters that
she slept in on
her big day,
choosing to get
up at 6:30am, a
half hour later
than usual,
given that she
would be facing
a long day
filled with
emotions and
wishes and her
first speech as
head of state.
She started her
morning with the
usual "toast"
and "juice" and
by 9:50am had to
tell reporters
she had let into
her house in
Villa Real,
Santa Ana, that
it was time to
go. "We don't
want to hold
back the
ceremony because
of us", Laura
told the hordes
of reporters and
cameras.
Outside there
was a mob of
well wishers,
neighbours,
scores of
reporters,
police and
traffic
officials who
would be
escorting her
for the ride to
the Sabana park.
With her
husband, son and
mother, Emilce
Miranda, at her
side, the
president-elect
was on her way
to to centre
stage.
A glass of water
calmed her
beating heart
before she was
to take the
presidential
sash from Oscar
Arias and give
her inauguration
speech.
Dressed in a
simple, but
elegant, ivory
two piece dress
- a gift from
her husband and
mother - Laura
never stopped
smiling.
The dress worn
by Laura is said
to have cost a
few thousand.
Her husband,
José María Rico,
would only say
that they had
planned on
spending only
us$200 to
us$250, but
ended up
spending more.
