Peaceful Protest
Turns Violent
Although inside
the Sabana park
it was all
smiles, cheers
and peace,
outside the park
on Paseo Colón
the scene was
totally
different, as a
peaceful march
turned violent,
with six people
detained by
police.
Police had to
react with force
when a group of
students tried
to force their
way past the
police
barricades, was
the explanation
by Raul River,
regional
director of the
Fuerza Pública
(police).
The protest
march was
organized by the
Sindeu, Banco
Popular, MOPT,
APSE unions and
ecologists and
students of the
UCR (Universidad
de Costa Rica)
and the UNA
(Universidad
Nacional),
asking for
autonomy of
unions, protest
against the Ley
de Salario Unico,
the
privatization of
the Limón docks
and the Crucitas
open-mining
project.
"We do not want
more of the
same" were some
of the shouts
from the
protestors.
Élida Cedeño,
president of the
APSE union, said
her membership
objects to the
plans by
president
Chinchilla to
continue much of
the Arias
policies./
The protestors
got as far as
the Gimnacio
Nacional, close
to a kilometre
away from the
location of the
inauguration
ceremony.
