"Do Something
For Your
Country"
Nicaraguans In
Costa Rica
Shouted At Their
President
It wasn't sure
if Nicaragua's
president Daniel
Ortega Saavedra
would be present
in Saturday's
inauguration
ceremony of
president
Chinchilla, but
he was,
accompanied by
his wife,
Rosario Murillo.
Within minutes
after the
inauguration
ceremony, the
Nicaragaun
president was
surrounded by
fellow citizens
who sought his
help while in
the middle of
the Sabana park.
Within seconds
of his exit from
the backstage,
Ortega was
mobbed and had
to be wisked
away quickly by
security.
"They are
charging us too
much, we need a
discount!" was
one of the
shouts aimed at
Ortega in
reference to
Costa Rica's new
immigration
rules that
requires payment
of us$100 for
over staying a
visitor's visa.
Ortega, before
being shoved
into the waiting
car, said "we
will be working
with her
(Chinchilla)".
"Are you sure?
Are you sure?
Don't forget?",
shouted one man.
Some 360.000
Nicaraguans make
their home in
Costa Rica, many
becoming legal
residents, some
even citizens,
while the rest
remain in Costa
Rica illegally.
Before leaving
the backstage,
Ortega told
reporters that
there would be a
meeting soon
with Chinchilla
to discuss
bilateral
issues.
The Nicaraguan
president
arrived late,
not hearing the
boos when his
presence was
announced and
rushed to the
airport to make
his 1:30pm take
off for
Nicaragua.
"Do something
for your
country", a
woman shouted at
the departing
president. |
