Re-Opened Today
From 6am To 3pm
After almost two
weeks of being
closed, the
Braulio Carrillo
or Ruta 32 has be re-opened
this morning
(Monday) to vehicular
traffic, but
with
restrictions.
Authorities of
the Ministerio
de Obras
Públicas y
Transportes (MOPT)
and the Policía
de Tránsito
(traffic police)
made the
decision to
re-open the road
that has been
closed since
Tuesday, April
27.
However, the
opening only be
between 6am and
3pm daily, which
can be a real
headache since
traffic on the
route will
without a doubt
be backed up.
The problem is
between
kilometres 22
and 25, east of
the Zurqui
tunnel to
Guapiles, where
landslides are
common, this
year more than
usual, as
several slopes
have come down
laying tons of
mud and debris
on the road.
MOPT officials
have been
blasting the
area to bring
down more mud
and debris to
minimize future
landslides but
the weather has
not been
cooperating,
delaying the
blasting time
and time again.
The road is the
main artery
between San José
and the port of
Limón.
Truckers say
they have been
losing some ¢15
million colones
daily due to the
road closure, as
their rigs are
too big for the
narrow and
winding
alternate road
that connects
Limón to San
José by way of
Cartago and
Turrialba.
MOPT officials
say the hope to
have the road
fully re-opened
this week,
ending the
nightmare for
the some 12.000
of vehicles that
use the road
daily.
