Electoral Preparation in
Venezuelan Week
CARACAS - The results of the internal
elections of the United Socialist Party of
Venezuela (PSUV) previous to parliamentary
elections in September caught the attention
of Venezuelans this week.
More than 2.5 million members of the
organization voted on Saturday in all the
circuits (87) to choose candidates for
deputies.
The figures far exceed the participation of
several opposition's organizations the past
April 25 called for primary elections in
just 15 electoral districts, with the
attendance of just over 365.000 voters.
In total, the PSUV elected 110 candidates to
deputies and their respective substitutes
with the participation of 38 percent of
registered citizen, while the opposition
chose only 22 candidates (with no
substitutes) with the participation of 9.4
percent of the electorate.
PSUV Vice President Celia Flores stated the
mechanism showed the social inclusion
precepts characterizing that group by
opening the doors to all sectors
traditionally excluded from the political
and social life of the nation.
According to the Venezuelan electoral
regulations, of the 165 National Assembly
members are nominally elected 110 and the
remaining 55 by lists.
Socialists are hoping for obtaining at least
two thirds of the seats in the National
Assembly, which would give it the qualified
majority to go further in the changes led by
Hugo Chavez since 1999.
While the opposition sectors want to achieve
primacy in Parliament to stop the changes.
The leader urged the PSUV candidates to
deputies to be prepared to make laws
proposed by the people and to demolish the
traces remained of the bourgeois state in
Venezuela.
