Nicaragua Opens Road and Gold
Mine
Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega on
Tuesday opened a road and a gold mine in the
department of Chontales, about 150
kilometers (92 miles) from Managua.
The new 33-kilometer (20 miles) road will
link the city of La Libertad, administrative
department of the municipality with the same
name, to the city of Juigalpa, capital of
Chontales, and will contribute to the area's
socioeconomic development.
This is the first time that La Libertad and
Juigalpa are linked by a paving road that is
now replacing the old path, which had a high
maintenance cost.
President Ortega was born in La Libertad in
September 11, 1945.
The gold mine in La Libertad is operated by
the Canadian B2Gold Company that has
invested us$54 million dollar equipping the
mine.
The mine's reopening will provide 350 new
jobs, starting from June, and is expected to
produce from 80,000 to 90,000 gold ounces
annually, representing us$85 million of the
gross exports, according to Mining and
Energy Minister Emilio Rappaccioli.
Rappaccaioli explained that the mine would
contribute around us$30 million to the
national economy.
The Canadian company has also invested in
other mining explorations in other areas of
the country, reflecting the confidence of
the foreign investors in the Nicaraguan
government. |
