Colombia, Panama Sign Co-op Agreement On Immigrant Control

BOGOTA - The authorities of Colombia and Panama signed on Tuesday a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to strengthen cooperation on immigrant control.

The agreement, signed by the Colombian Administrative Department of Security (DAS) and the Panamanian National Service of Migration (PNSM), aims to prevent and fight crimes such as drug, human and weapon trafficking.

The agreement was considered an important step on bilateral cooperation in the fight against transnational crimes, though DAS and the PNSM began to exchange intelligence to help track down criminals of the two countries more than five years ago.

The two sides vowed to achieve these ends by exchanging information to help crack down on criminal gangs, the Colombian government said in a statement.

The DAS officers will train their Panamanian counterparts in immigrant management, graphology and dactylology to ensure more effective control of immigrants at their common borders.

The MOU also includes stipulation on deportation of undocumented foreign nations and establishment of databank to track down immigrant trafficking.

The immigration authorities of both countries have expressed concern about the increasing immigrant trafficking in recent years.
