Gas Prices Going Up ¢41 Colones A Litre

Best to tighten the belt or drive less as gasoline prices are getting ready to take another sharp increase with the latest request by the state refinery - the Refinadora Costarricense de Petróleo (Recope) - to boost prices by ¢41 colones a litre.

That in addition to the ¢5 colones increase that will take effect any day now, as the tax portion of the prices was adjusted, an increase that did not occur due to the Imprenta Nacional workers strike that stopped the publication of the notice.

The Autoridad Reguladora de los Servicios Públicos (Aresep) - government regulator - confirms the request by Recope, that if approved, would see gasoline prices go from the present ¢618 to ¢659 for a litre of super; ¢587 to ¢628 for regular; and, ¢514 to ¢555 for diesel.

Recope, in a press statement, said the increase is needed to ensure that the state company has sufficient resources to operate and better its infrastructure.

If the increase is approved, the higher prices will be at the pumps by the middle of June.
