17 Students Detained In Protest Against Use Of Tight Pants

An order by the principal banning the use of tight pants was the motive behind the dispute of the students of the Liceo Vargas Calvo in San Pedro, that escalated to a full scale riot, ending up in the detention of 17 students.

Throwing stones, including exploding home made bombs, forced the Fuerza Pública to respond.

The school principal, Abraham Barboza, was forced to call in the police when a group of students who did not show up for a social studies test, remained outside the school and began to throw stones.

Barboza said the problem of banning the use of tight pants is not new. The principal said he ordered the ban some three months ago, but only this week made an appeal to the parents and for their commitment to have their children wear the school uniform properly.

The violence escalated when police tried to disperse the group, damaging one police patrol car and one of the vehicles of a television news team on the scene covering the story.

Police officials had to endure the constant pelting of stones.

Taking part in the protest were also youths not attending the school.

This not the first incident of students using violence to protest a school directive.

In November last year, students burned the car of the principal of the colegio de Bananito de Limón. Also in 2009, fights broke out between rival students of the liceos de Costa Rica and Calle Falla, resulting in the arrest of 10 students.

In 2007, the Liceo Roberto Gamboa en San Rafael abajo de Desamparados was the scene of disturbances when the school principal was pelted with rocks.
