University Strike Fails in
Venezuela
CARACAS - A university strike called
by the University Professors Federation
lacked sufficient support countrywide,
according to reports from student and
academic representatives.
Minister of Higher Education Edgardo Ramirez
said the strike called for May 12-13 failed,
with less than 20 percent of support and
accused organizers of political motivations
behind their salary demands.
Bolivarian News Agency reports from
different regions support to Ramirez' views
with remarks by Profesor Nogel Rodriguez,
from the Oriente University (UDO), Monagas
core, who said that 70 percent of professors
and students of his school disagree with
this kind of actions and carry out their
activities normally.
General Secretary of the Student Centers of
the National Experimental University of
Guyana, Omar Gomez, estimated at 95 percent
the rejection of the call to suspend the
classes.
Even right-wing professors are giving their
classes normally while student services like
the dining hall and transportation operated
efficiently, said Gomez. |
