Although Costa Rica inaugurated its new president last Saturday (May 8), today, Saturday, May 15, Costa Rica has again a new president, albeit it temporarily while Laura Chinchilla is in Spain to finalize the trade agreement deal with the European Union.

In Costa Rica when the president in incapacitated or away from the country, the first vice-president get the nod to steer the country and down the line to the second-vice president, the president of the Legislative Assembly and so on down the line.

So, today, after 5pm, Alfio Piva Mesén, is acting president until doña Laura gets back.

The exception to the above was precedented by former president oscar Arias (2006-2010), who was left without his two vice-presidents during the last year of his administration and managed the country remotely by telephone and internet.

Accompanying Chinchilla on her European trip is Manuel Rodríguez, president of the Unión de Cámaras y Asociaciones de la Empresa Privada (Uccaep), Álvaro Sáenz, president of the Cámara de Agricultura y Agroindustria, Enrique Acosta, president of theMovimiento Solidarista and Xiomara Rojas, secretaria general del Sindicato Independiente de Trabajadores Estatales Costarricenses (Siteco).

Negotiations for a trade deal with Europe began two years ago (Chinchilla was vice-president at the time).

There is all expectations that Chinchilla will be back in Costa Rica in the coming week with a signed deal.
