ICE Begins
Mobile Internet
Service For Real
On Sunday
Beginning on
Sunday, May 16,
the Instituto
Costarricense de
Electricidad
(ICE) will be
offering its
"advanced"
mobile internet
service, ending
the
"promotional"
phase of the
service that has
been operating
since January.
For the
confused, that
this means is
that beginning
on Monday,
customers will
have to choose
the mobile
internet package
they want and
pay the full
fare.
Still confused?
Understandably.
Since its
inception of its
3G Kolbi
service, ICE
offered mobile
internet
services up to
1.5 Mpbs to
customers who
signed. But, for
some reason it
never delivered
on that promise,
providing
sporadic service
at speeds
ranging from a
crawl to
lightning.
On Friday, ICE
began sending
out text
messages to all
existing
customers of the
end of the
"promotional"
phase.
What this means
is that the
"honeymoon" is
over and the
packages
promised during
the last few
months are no
longer.
Beginning on
Monday,
customers can
choose the basic
package of
˘3.995 for a
connection of up
to 128Kbps, a
little faster
than a beetle
going up the
hills of Ezcazú
to us$13.56 for
a speed of upt o
256 kpbs,
us$20.34 for up
to 512 kbps and
us$27.12 for up
1 Mbps.
The 256 and 512
services have
transfer limits
of 500 Mb and 1
Gb,
respectively,
after which a
charge of
us$0.000014 (the
number is
correct) per Kb.
Also, note that
after the basic
plan, the rate
changes to US
dollars and not
colones,
although ICE
will continue to
bill monthly in
colones, at the
day's exchange
rate.
What does all
this mean? This
explains ICE's
poor quality
service during
the past several
months, claiming
that it was all
promotional.
ICE also makes
it quite clear
on its website

that the top
speed will be
based on the
capacity of its
3G network.
Uh? We will let
you figure that
one out.
