Insecurity Raises Land Transportation Costs in Central America

Insecurity and violence increases in land transportation in Central America due to high costs to protect drivers, vehicles and merchandize.

For every truck that travels once a week in this region 14,000 dollars are needed for security, reported a study published in La Nacion daily.

Costs include purchase of The Global Positioning System (GPS) to monitor monthly the vehicle, payment to patrols and custody to protect them.

This does not include risk insurance policies for the driver, loss of merchandize nor 80 dollar pay offs to gangs to allow circulation in some of the cities neighborhoods.

"Insecurity is a serious problem in all of Central America", affirmed Jorge Pattoni, manager of Dos Pinos company.

Assaults to vehicles, temporary kidnappings, and beating up the driver have spread throughout the region but are more frequent in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. Among the articles preferred by the delinquents are electrical appliances, cell phones, video reproducers, televisions and sound equipment.

The subject of violence is of concern in Central America where there is a high intra regional trade mostly along land roads.
