Group Files Appeal With Constitutional Court To Stop Legislator's Pay Hike

Legislators looking to vote themselves a hefty pay hike will have to heed to the decision of the Constitutional Court on a filing by a group of citizens alleging violation of rights of equality.

Legislators approved on Monday a motion to fast track the salary increase bill that would see legislator's salaries go from ¢2 million colones a month to ¢4.6 million colones.

María Gabrieal Chavarría, a lawyer and petitioner of the group of a dozen citizens have filed a "recurso amparo" (appeal) that forced the Constitutional Court to intervene.

The recurso asks the magistrates to order legislators to put a stop to the process legislating a salary increase, saying that the legislators were not honest with the people in saying that they would legislate for their own benefit.

Chavarría said the appeal asks the court magistrates to place a hand to their heart and take in consideration the needs of the people, especially during the current financial crisis.
