Colombian Government Asks Neighboring Countries To Expel Rebels

BOGOTA - The Colombian government asked Tuesday its neighboring countries to expel rebels of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), the largest rebel group in Colombia.

"We ask the governments of our neighboring countries to expel the rebels from their territories and cooperate with us in border controlling." Colombia's Minister of the Interior and Justice Fabio Valencia told reporters.

He added that the Colombian government will strengthen border security to prevent FARC rebels from entering neighboring countries.

He made the remarks after a Brazilian newspaper said that FARC rebels have several bases in Brazil and use them for drug trafficking.

The Colombian government has repeatedly accused Venezuela of permitting some FARC leaders to take refuge in its territory, but the Venezuelan government has denied the charge.

Venezuela froze its diplomatic ties with Colombia at the end of last July in response to Bogota's accusation of alleged involvement in arms supplies to FARC rebels.
