Cuba To Conduct National
Exercises To Tackle Earthquakes, Tsunamis
HAVANA - Cuba will conduct for the first
time civilian and military maneuvers on May
21-23 and June 25-26 to tackle earthquakes
and tsunamis, authorities said on Tuesday.
Cuba has an emergency civil defense system
against hurricanes, however, this is the
first time the country holds a national
exercise to assess the capacity of response
to an earthquake or a tsunami.
The maneuvers will include practical
exercises to mitigate the damages caused by
earthquakes, exercises on possible toxic or
oil spills and health emergencies, said the
deputy chief of the Civil Defense, Lt Col.
Leandro Nicolau.
Cuba has undergone some 25 earthquakes since
the 7.3-magnitude earthquake hit Haiti in
